Steve Sanford was born in West Texas and raised in Colorado where he spent his teenage years climbing, backpacking and bicycling in the Rockies, usually with a sketchbook in his knapsack. His drawings and paintings in high school lead to a full scholarship to art school—Pratt Institute in New York City where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art/Painting. Pratt’s painting department at that time focused on abstraction, and after four years of that diversion he longed to paint pictures again and so began a successful thirty-year career as a freelance illustrator in New York’s highly competitive advertising and publishing markets. All during this time Steve continued with weekly figure drawing sessions and workshops at the Art Students League, School of Visual Arts and the New York Academy of Art, gradually shifting his concentration from illustration to fine art
