A young bear cub dreams of flying as he watches a hummingbird dance through the trees. Though bound by gravity, his heart soars with hope and imagination, and a new season of life is just around the corner.
Artist Notes:
Several years ago, I painted a little bear cub looking at a hummingbird and wishing he could fly too. A lot has happened in my life since that painting. This spring I wanted to revisit this theme and paint the bear cub who’s grown just a little older and watching a hummingbird who’s growing up too! The hummingbird now has a home and mate, and soon they’ll be expecting some babies! The cub is still bound to the laws of gravity, but he has climbed up the tree to try to get as close to flying as he can and hang out with his hummingbird friends.
As 2020 unfolded and I kept going back and painting this big painting, the feeling of being bound by restrictions really hit home and I saw a little of myself in this bear. And now that summer is officially over, I wanted to share this painting as a way of saying goodbye to a summer of wishing for better. Sometimes there’s great beauty in dreaming of better days. Because time passes, life takes its shape and dreams come true. This bear might not be able to believe it now, but soon he will be a little older and have his own family to care for and he’ll realize that even if his body can’t fly in the sky like he dreamed of as a child with his hummingbird childhood friend, his life's journey will nonetheless make his heart soar to the heavens. Just keep wishing! Abraham Hunter
